Patchwork kitchen floor made from Marmoleum ends - Cory Doctorow @ BoingBoing

Cory Doctorow writes this brief post on Vermont Eco Builder's effort to layout a kitchen floor made from Marmoleum salvaged from a landfill. The Vermont Eco Builder's blog has a lot more information and photos to go along with their build including the process they used to create the color scheme and layout they wanted. Marmoleum is apparently an eco-friendly flooring made from organic materials.
It's a great use of recycled materials while providing an aestheically pleasing look to a kitchen floor. What's more, it's wonderful that the company installing the floor offers up their technique for laying the floor, meaning others can create their own Marmoleum kitchen floor. As Doctorow says, the effect is striking in terms of color and look.

I don't think I've posted about this yet, but if I have then apologies for the double post. Even so, I think it deserves more attention just for the sheer cool factor. Apparently the bottom layer is silver with a couple of other layers on top and a final wallpaper outer layer. The layering allows for the use of the wallpaper in regular applications, but personally I see this kind of tech being more applicable to avant-garde clubs and anterooms of exclusive consulting or advertising firms. Either way, it's wallpaper that lights up! How cool is that?

Now that is cool, but not surprising considering how hard a diamond is. But what I think people don't realize that if you hit a diamond in just the right way, you can shatter it. So while this might look cool, it's impractical and actually dangerous to the stone. There's a reason why the old European cuts have a dot in the center when you look at the stone from the very top; people were afraid of breaking that point, the culet, off.
